I've just started posting regarding studying Korean.
Warning! this Blog contains spoilers, if you haven't watched "파리의 연인" yet then I suggest you do so before reading the contents of this site.

Thus far I've started from Episode 8 of "파리의 연인", I'm trying to identify the most useful vocabulary which will aid learners in understanding the story. Also to explain some of the more idiomatic expressions used.
To find a particular Episode use the Labels on the right hand margin, rather than the date archives.

the first few episodes of the series begins in Paris and therefore French is used in many of the scenes. which is rather distracting hence I've jumped to episode 8.

while 주주 only occurs a few times in this episode it occurs very frequently in later episodes.

"말 새나갈까봐 그러는지.." 새다 means to leak out. e.g. 지붕에서 비가 샌다 The roof leaks (rain).

기주 and 승준 discuss 최이사's activities and shares in the company

차명 (借名) [borrow, name] a borrowed-name, a false name

계좌 (計座) [calculate, ??] account, bank account

The term 낙하산 (parachute) occurs a few time in this episode, its meaning is very much idiomatic, I don't know the origins of it but it means to be supported (in secret) by someone in a high position within the company.

• 낙하산 인사(落下傘人事) an appointment by orders from above[from the top] e.g.저 이사는 낙하산 인사 중의 한 사람이다. He is one of the executives sent from the government agency.
• [윤아 and 태영 are waiting for the elevator when two other female employees stop behind them. The pair discuss rumors about 기주's girlfriend ]

태영 and 기주 meet in front of the coffee vending machine, during the conversation 태영 calls 기주 a 쫌팽이. Note the spelling variations. Dictionary form is 좀팽이 and 좀스럽다.

좀스럽다

1. 【마음이】(be) small-minded;petty 좀스러운 사람 a petty person.
2. 【규모가】(be) small;petty;trifling;be on a small scale. 좀스러운 일 petty jobs;trifles
   

쫌팽이 == 좀팽이【사람】a petty little person;【물건】a petty[small] thing;a thing too small to be worth looking at

기주 meets 윤아 and 한회장 at a restaurant, shortly after that 윤아 leaves at 기주's request. 기주 and 한회장 discuss matters.

In this scene there is quite a bit of discussion about hiring and firing people.

The basic meaning of 넣다 is to put in; let in or pour in, but it also includes the meaning of "to take someone (or place someone) into a school or company".

한회장: "니가 웬아일 우리 회사에 넣어 줬다고?"

• 웬아일 means some child

내보내다

1. 【나가게 하다】let out;let go out;send;【실외로】turn 《a person》 out-of-doors;show 《a person》 the door. 야구부를 시합에 내보내다 let the baseball team take part in the game
2. 【쫓아내다】expel;turn[get, put, send, drive] out;kick out 《of the house, army》;evict(셋방 따위에서);【해고하다】 가정부를 내보내다 fire a maid.그만 떠들어라, 그렇지 않으면 내보낼 거다 Stop making that noise, or I´ll throw you out. 그녀는 남자 친구가 다른 여자를 만나자 그를 내보냈다 She kicked her boyfriend out when she found out he was seeing other girls.

this is followed by 한회장 insisting 기주 get rid of the girl.
한회장:내보내..니가 안하면 내가해..내가 내보내면 그애 상처가 클게야..너도 알다시피 내가 해결하는 방법 한가지 밖에 더 있니?

finally 한회장 phones the office to speak to 안영수 이사 (director 안영수) and demands his resignation (사표(辭表)) .
한회장:당신 사표써..!듣기 싫으니까 쓰라고..!!
and is that wasn't clear enough he finishes with,
한회장:당장 사표쓰고 퇴근해.!


[ by the car outside of the restaurant]


윤아:유치한 짓좀 했어요 내가..!
기주:유치한 줄은 알아?
윤아:알아도 어떻게 해요..미친년 소릴 들어도 이 방법밖엔 없는걸..
기주:그소리 아주 자주 들을꺼 같은데..좀 비키지?

겹다

눈물겹다 is derived from 겹다.

• (be) tearful;sad;pathetic;touching;heartrending.눈물겨운 이야기 a pathetic[touching] story. 눈물겨운 노력 pathetically sincere effort. 눈물겨워지다 be moved to tears.
  

Paris Episode 4

태영 and 기주 meet outside and go to a 커피숍 where they talk uncomfortably.
기주 talks about compensating 태영 for her help in Paris.

기주:뭐 결론부터 예기 하자면 강태영씨한테 도움받은거 보상하고싶어. (continued further down page)
There are actually two very similar hanja readings for 보상 and both have the meaning "to compensate someone". They are 보상(補償) and 보상(報償). If you know which one is being used here could you let me know, I think its the later (because he only mentions her help not her suffering), but really not sure, it probably makes little difference in this dialogue.

태영: 보상이 중요한게 아니라 사과가 먼저 아닌가요? 나는요 적어도 이자리에 나오면 미안하다는 말은 들을줄 알았어요.

기주: 보상을 하겠다는말은 미안하다는 말도 포함되 있는거 아닌가?

and again later in the following when they part and in flashbacks.

태영:나쁘게 헤어지지 않아서요.(기주, 아....그렇군) 정말고마웠어요. 파리의 일까지 포함해서 내가 평생 할수 없는 일들을 하게 해줬어요.

• 【해고되다】get fired;get the axe
• note: Spelling variation 짤리다, I don't know why there are the two forms, 잘리다 is only form I could find in the dictionary however 짤리다 appears to be quite common. Also the DVD subtitles tended to use 잘리다 whereas the scenario text used 짤리다.
• 잘리다 is more informal than 해고, it appears they correspond well to the English "I was fired" and "I was dismissed".
